How to Avoid the 5 Most Common Clinic Fitout Mistakes

Deciding to embark on a fitout for your medical practice or clinic can feel like a daunting decision, with many influencing factors and aspects to consider. However, there are simple steps you can take and measures which you can put in place to help make sure that you fulfil your vision and end up with the ideal space for your needs. We have outlined how you can avoid the most common fitout mistakes below:

Focus on your waiting room as much as the rest of your practice

Many people tend to focus on their surgery rooms or the rooms which have a specific medical purpose, as these are the rooms where a service is provided. However, your waiting room sets the tone for your entire clinic and can often have a big impact on your patients’ feelings or opinion of your practice. In any medical field, your patients should always be your number one priority and therefore your goal should be to create an atmosphere in which they feel comfortable and relaxed.

When planning your fitout, you should always include comfortable seating options for patients and consider providing them with entertainment to enjoy while they wait, such as a television. Also, you shouldn’t waste a good marketing opportunity; your waiting room can be used as a kind of billboard for your practice as you can put up advertisements, flyers and pieces of content which reflect the values of your practice.

Don’t just focus on functionality

Similarly to creating a welcoming waiting room, you should be creating a pleasant and safe environment throughout your practice. Whilst you obviously want your space to be functional and serve the purpose for which it has been designed, patients don’t want to feel like they’re just in a cold and sterile space. As it is, most people don’t particularly enjoy a trip to the dentist or doctor, so try not to give them any more reasons to feel hesitant. Where possible, try to avoid having very narrow corridors and use warm, natural lighting with brighter colour schemes.

Think long term

You should always consider your long term plans and goals when making a major change like a fitout otherwise, you may end up actually stunting your clinic’s growth. For example, if you’re planning to expand your number of patients, does your floorplan or waiting room physically allow for that expansion? Do you have enough storage space? Thinking about the future, rather than just your current circumstances, will help you to understand and prioritise the needs for your fitout.

Avoid taking shortcuts

Getting a fitout is a major investment of your time, money and energy so if you’re going to do it, you need to make sure you’re doing it properly. Choosing cheap and low-quality materials, equipment or furnishings is likely to result in two negative outcomes; the first is that your practice will quickly become worn looking and potentially incur repair or replacement fees which will end up costing you more money in the long run and secondly, your patients will lose faith in your practice and head elsewhere to a clinic which instils more confidence in them. Opt for good quality, durable and easy to clean items.

Create a plan

Before you do anything, you need to have a plan in place for your fitout to help prevent any mishaps or unpleasant surprises along the way. Spend time considering your options and ensuring that you are utilising your space to the best of your ability. At Dentifit, we are always happy to consult with clients and advise them on the best use of their facilities.
